We have received some terribly sad news this week regarding 2 of our longest serving members. Both John James and Arthur Puckrin have sadly passed on.
John James a long standing member of Billingham Swimming Club died on 13th July in Butterwick Hospice. John had been a member of the club for many years helping to teach along with Joan Taylor and Mary Wright the children in the first lane of the main pool. Latterly John was found helping at the end of the second lane encouraging the young children and this year was the first time in many years that John hadn’t been a member.
John is remembered with great affection from coaches and children alike and many of the children who have passed through his care will have many happy memories of John, giving them the confidence to improve their swimming to go on to greater things.
John was the first person to swim in the pool when the Forum was reopened after the closure to update the centre.
Everyone who knew John send Margaret and his family their condolences.
Arthur was a Master swimmer who swam for the club for many years only passing on his membership this year when he was unable to compete anymore. As well as a swimmer he won many competitions in Triathlons and the Iron Man. Arthur was a Legend in his own lifetime and entertained the masters team with many stories.
Arthur will be missed by many and we wish Mary and his family our condolences.
